How Massage Therapists Prevent Burnout

I get asked this question often by client and others. How do you do all that Massage and not get tired or blown out? That’s a good question. We as Massage Therapist do our best to take good care of ourselves. Eat well, Exercise, Yoga, Minimizing Stress, and of course get a Massage. These are some to name a few of the things we do. There are a handful of direct things we do to combat the fatigue of the job and here are some of them in more detail.

Body Mechanics. What are Body Mechanics? It is the art of positioning our bodies to use the leverage of our own body weight in combination with movement to be the most effective in delivering the maximum amount of pressure with minimum loss of energy. This is probably the most effective preventive care we do constantly throughout the day of doing massage. You would be surprised how many massages one can do without experiencing fatigue by having really good body mechanics.

Stretching of the fingers, hands, and wrists. This is a practice that is performed by most Massage Therapist on a daily basis before and after work. It keeps muscle tissues opened up for better blood flow throughout the day and prevents injury.

Avoiding the use of the thumb. Thumbs are usually the most overused finger in the Massage practice and are usually the first to go when fatigue starts to set in. Massage therapists are taught to use other related movements such as fists, elbows, or knuckles and handheld tools such as a T- bar to apply specific pressure and give the thumbs a break.

Did I mention Massage? Of course I did! That is one of the best ways we keep the muscle tissue healthy and happy to keep doing great massages for everyone. Some good solid deep tissue and cross-fiber work on the hands, wrists, and forearms are a great relief to all the hard working Massage Therapists out there.

Well, there you have it. These are a few great tips on how your local Massage Therapists prevent burnout and have a long and successful career without injury. Blessings to all! Come and get a great Massage today at the Alpha School of Massage or Massage Theory.
